Dr. Jerry Apps discusses the importance of creativity throughout one’s life. He uses the motto taken from Harry Chapin’s song, Circle to spur all adults to find the passions to keep your life inspired.
“That which we were introduced to when we were young, will return in our lives after full time work. Be of some worth. As you provide for others, you’re doing for yourself. Tell your story!” Words of advice from Apps.
Farmer, educator, writer, do what you love. Listen to Jerry Apps, storyteller, and lover of every life’s passion.
We thank the Chapin Foundation for permission to use Harry Chapin’s song, Circle, for this podcast.

I enjoyed hearing Jerry Apps’ message. I hope families, schools, and community programs provide many opportunities for children to explore life and its expression. Reminiscing may nurture their curiosity and creativity over lifetimes.
Carol Larson says
Thank you, Mary, I totally agree with you and Jerry Apps about giving kids a broad experience of the arts. Now that I’m older, I feel like I’m just catching up with what I missed as a child, but grateful for the time and energy to do it.
J Gill says
Very good interview, as I am of that age now, thinking of what to do in my last years.
I grew up summers near Wild Rose, so this story hits the mark especially well.
So what have I done? Well, I did just recently went back to school and got an MA in painting, something visual, and something I hope to be able to do a long time. And it is a great challenge for me, not something easy.
Carol Larson says
J Gill.. I’m in awe! getting your MA in painting, what a great challenge. Am sure you’re right, though, it will serve as a wonderful outlet for the rest of your life. I feel that way about writing. Though I always considered myself a writer, as a journalist and documentary maker, I am struggling with writing a book… difficult, but also a blast!

I like that Jerry Apps doesn’t like the term “retirement.” I don’t like it either:-) When people ask me if I’m retired, I usually say, “I prefer to say I’m refocused.”
Carol Larson says
I like refocused! Great word. I’m in the market for a new title, as after 5 years I’m giving up on saying I’m retired. Can’t stand the looks of pity, as if I’m five minutes from dead. Thanks for such a positive contribution to my vocabulary.

Fabulous interview! Inspiring, heartwarming, a delight start to finish.
Circle happens to be one of my favorites as well.
Here’s to storytelling, sharing ……and know I’m sharing this broadly.
Thank you Carol, Jer et al

Thank you… things do come around, don’t they!

Thank you, It is nice to hear reinforcement among the constant rain of discouragement, and being asked why I went to school for what “ends”. Thank you to teachers who keep a thread alive for the humanities.
