In this week’s episode, Divorcing Your Job, Carol Larson uses the metaphor of divorce in viewing the changes inherent in retirement.
Listen as she discusses the similarities of these two major changes on a person’s life, from property settlements, alimony and how both change how you define yourself. Also, she cautions how both situations can cause a person to feel “untethered,” often taking years to reinvent yourself.

“Divorcing Your Job” is a great analogy. When people ask what I do for a living, it feels weird to say I’m retired because I’ve ramped up my freelance business with clients and writing projects I didn’t have time for before and I’m doing both volunteer and paid tutoring (I’m a “retired” teacher), so I’m actually working a lot. The big difference is that I get to structure my own time. Thanks for another awesome podcast on retirement! I love hearing these perspectives.

Thanks, Peggy. Wish I could take credit for the analogy, but it was a friend who made that so accurate comparison. I’m so grateful for those who guided me, and glad to be able to pass on the wisdom gifted to me.

Carol, you really nailed it! I’m counting down the days to becoming untethered. I have to admit to being ecstatic and terrified at the same time. So glad I can use your words of wisdom to help me on my journey. thanx! wOO
