When was the last time you were so engrossed in learning something, the time flew by? The luxury of allowing yourself not to scan a piece of information, but truly fit the pieces of learning together in your head, just for you.
Sounds like something out of a fairy tale, no it’s a freedom – the freedom in retirement to learn.
In this episode’s “Ask Mary Helen” she answers a question she hears a lot from retirees. What do I do with my time? Time is the one non-renewable resource in our retirement and so the variety of activities are endless and daunting as well.
Her answer: Develop a personal learning project. Listen in on her suggestions.

I began tutoring at our local Literacy Council. I saw how hard my students were working to learn English, I thought I should put some effort into learning their Spanish. I enrolled in an online course through the UW system and am enjoying it very much. It also changes the relationship with my student because we are now equals. She helps me as much as I help her. It also gives me a better perspective of learning a new language as an adult. Patience and fortitude!

Mary Ann, love the teacher becomes a student. Really speaks to how we all get a chance to learn in our retirement. Thanks so much for sharing. Patience and fortitude, that’s the phrase my mom used to say all the time. Thanks for the memory too!

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
